Gilberto Benetton Has Sadly Passed Away

Gilberto Benetton has sadly passed away at the age of 77, after suffering from a short illness. The United Colours of Benetton co founder’s death comes just three months after that of his younger brother Carlo aged 74. "Gilberto Benetton died at home today in Treviso (northeast Italy) following a brief illness," the Benetton group said in a brief statement. "His wife Lalla, daughters Barbara and Sabrina and son-in-law Ermanno were with him in his final moments," the Italian group announced continued.

After founding United Colours of Benetton with his two brothers and sister, Gilberto was credited with diversifying the company away from the clothing business and growing them into the multi-billion euro giant they now are. United Colours of Benetton became very popular in the late 1970’s for their signature soft wool jumpers produced in a variety of colours. The company began to move from strength to strength between the early 1980’s and the millennium; it’s fame largely spiralling from daring ad campaigns by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, including a 1989 poster which featured a black woman breastfeeding a white baby.

The family is now one of the most influential in Italy, with ties in construction, retail, transport and catering. At the time of his death, Gilberto was vice-president of the family holding company, Edizone, and also VP of Autogrill an Italian-based multinational food and drink company.
